Elizabeth pressed her forehead hard into the wet soil. She clenched her fists into a ball and whispered into the hole she’d clawed into the ground.

“The deeper I bury my secrets, she thought, “the more they will leave me be”.

But that night – just like every night since she had gently closed the front door behind her for the last time – she heard them on the wind once more; at first a whisper, but soon a relentless howling that was too much for her to bear.

“Please.” She sobbed. “Please just leave me here in peace.”
